The title of this doco disturbs me from the outset. the pressure this poor man must have been under to 'be' brilliant all the time must have been immense. having bipolar or any other mental health issue on top of being creative in any way doesn't mean you've been kissed by god. i can tell you now - i can reassure you now, having a mental health problem like depression - in any form, is not a gift from heaven - nor a heavenly experience. that title is wrong from where i'm sitting. i have a feeling that Andy Irons may have had a similar outlook too. it sounds more like a curse than a kiss. Bipolar disorder is one of, if not THE most misunderstood, stigmatized illness(es) out there.
People who experience this condition, are suffering tremendously by experiencing manic and depressive symptoms like insomnia, delusional thoughts (e.g. baseless feelings of guilt or persecutory delusion) inexpressible sadness, feeling of being empty, racing thoughts, lack of interest in everything, grandiosity, compulsive thoughts or suicidal ideation to name only a view.
These states of mood can not be controlled by ones willpower since they have their origin in an imbalanced brain chemistry and are not linked to current life events. This means that somebody with bipolar disorder can be depressed even though nothing bad has happened to him/her.
Many, like Andy Irons are medicating themselves by alcohol and drug abuse. The psychological strain can get really bad for a long time that they would do ANYTHING to make it stop. There is still no cure and sadly quite often (in 20% of the cases) it ends with suicide.
Bipolar is often linked to high creativity. Many well known artists, poets, writers and entrepreneurs like Vincent Van Gogh, Ernest Hemingway and Kurt Cobain lived with this condition. All of them created something beautiful out of their suffering.
This movie is one step in the right direction, by showing an unadorned, authentic story of what life can be with this condition. Education and raising awareness can break the stigma.
